What is Xylene?

Many of us would know the smell of a marker anywhere - it's that strong and familiar sweet aroma that reminds you of paint or even varnish. That signature odour is actually caused by a colorless liquid called Xylene which is used as a solvent in some pens and markers. The solvent helps the ink flow from the barrel to the page, and evaporates after it is exposed to the open air.

What you may not have noticed is that Artline has stopped using Xylene in most of its products and has substituted the traditional solvent with an alcohol. The only obvious difference is the smell - whereas Xylene has a sweet aroma, the alcohol has a more neutral odour.

The reason behind Artline's move away from using Xylene as a solvent is because of a concern amongst some community members that the product could cause negative health effects. In 1996 the U.S. Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry found that if a person were to be exposed to a high level of Xylene (such as in a paint factory) there was a risk of symptoms such as ""irritation of the skin, eyes, nose and throat."" The International Agency for Research on Cancer (part of the United Nations World Health Organization) determined that Xylene cannot be classified as a carcinogen. Nevertheless, Shachihata (the manufacturer of Artline) has removed Xylene from most of its Artline-branded products, with the main exception being the Industrial Marker series (EK-17 and EK-19).

You can check whether your Artline product is Xylene free by referring to the packaging, looking on the actual pen or marker itself or by looking out for this symbol next to any product featured on this website. In any case, you should never deliberately inhale or concentrate the fumes of any pen or maker for the same reason you should be careful using paints, aerosols and cosmetics.

For more information on Xylene view the U.S. Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry's report.

What is the best marker for window advertising/signs?

Sign writers and window dressers are very expensive, particularly if you only want to advertise a short sale or promotion. What's more, we often see the same designs and colours over and over again, making it even harder to make your store, car yard or festive display stand out. So why not save a fortune and do your own eye-catching signage?

Artline Poster Marker Tempera are filled with a water-based, pigment ink which can write on everything from glass to stone. What's more, the ink can be easily washed off any non-porous surface but it is also water and fade resistant. There are five different Artline Poster Marker sizes to choose from, starting with Poster Marker 4 (2mm nib), and then Poster Marker 6 (6mm nib), 12 (12mm nib), 20 (20mm nib) and finishing with the huge Poster Marker 30 (30mm nib). Add to that a range of between 8 and 15 colours depending on the nib size you use, Artline Poster Markers are the cheap way to make vibrant window displays, posters, signs and banners.

Unlike sign writer's paint, Artline Poster Markers can easily be used to draw intricate illustrations plus you can go over previous applications without any bleed-through. Of course Artline Poster Markers are perfect for cafes, florists, schools, nurseries and car salespeople, but had you thought of these other uses?

  • Decorate your house windows at Christmas with snow, holly and of course Santa Claus and his reindeer.
  • Directly write on wood or use the Poster Marker's opaque finish to tint wood in craft applications.
  • Add stencilled designs to glass shower screens, and when you're sick of them, simply wash them off. Perfect for creating a bit of bathroom fun for young children or livening up a dull laundry window.
  • Decorate a child's bedroom mirror with their favourite characters or make your own height chart.
  • Make bold and bright signage to point customers to your store or to indicate where to park, pay or line up.

What markers will last outdoors?

When you're writing labels for plants, marking construction material or numbering stock kept outdoors, the last thing you want is for all your hard work to be washed away by the next rain. For that reason Artline have developed a range of products which are fade and water resistant, specially made for trade, garden and industrial applications.

You have two main options when choosing an outdoor marker - pigmented or dye stuff ink.

Pigment Ink has a similar consistency to paint so that you can write on any surface without the marking being influenced by the surface colour. The marking with remain full and vibrant.

The traditional option, Dye Stuff Ink is used in most markers. For Dye Stuff Ink products designed for outdoor use, the ink is more resilient to the elements and, for best results, there needs to be a good contrast between the colour of the writing surface and the colour of the marker itself.

Whether you're using Pigment or Dye Stuff Ink, you need to make sure that the surface you're writing on is not the same colour as the marker itself.

PIGMENT INK PRODUCTS

Paint Markers: The best option for outdoor marking, Artline Paint Markers can write on any surface, including metal, rubber, timber, glass, plastic and stone. With a completely opaque finish, Paint Markers provide a dense and crisp colour even on dark and transparent surfaces. What's more, you can be confident that if you use a Paint Marker outdoors, your writing will be there for a long time.

Paint Markers come in four sizes and various colours.
Poster Markers: Useful for when you want a long-lasting but not necessarily permanent outdoor marker, Poster Markers are used in everything from writing on glass shop windows to making signage. On non-porous surfaces, Poster Marker can be easily removed with household cleaning fluids, yet markings made on absorbent materials such as cardboard, will remain strong and vibrant even after extended exposure to the elements.

Paint Markers come in five sizes and various colours.
Metallic Ink Markers: One of the most well known Artline ranges, Metallic Ink Markers are often used in letter writing and craft, but they can also be used outdoors. The gold marker uses crushed brass pigments whilst the silver uses aluminium to produce a rich and permanent finish on paper, cardboard, glass, porcelain, plastic, rubber and wood. Particularly suited to outdoor signage, Metallic Ink Markers are also preferable when writing on dark outdoor surfaces to produce a high-contrast effect.

Metallic Ink Markers are available in three sizes.

DYE STUFF INK PRODUCTS

Industrial Markers: Perfect for tradespeople and construction workers, Industrial Markers provide a cost-efficient means of writing permanently on plastic, metal, glass, porcelain and rubber. Getting Ink off Fabric and Carpet

If you accidentally write on your clothes or children colour in your new carpet, the first thought many of us would have is to wash the stain off as quickly as possible. Don't! Wetting an ink stain actually sets the mark on the fabric, probably ruining your clothes (or carpet!) for good. Instead, take your stained fabric to a dry cleaner or call a professional carpet cleaner and tell them whether permanent or water-based ink was the culprit.

Don't be tempted to use off-the-shelf cleaning products, because most involve having to wet the fabric, which could make the stain lighter but even bigger. Another remedy some people use to remove ink from fabric is to layer hair spray on the stain which sometimes breaks down the mark, allowing it to be soaked up by a tissue or paper towel. Baby wipes have also been known to produce similar results. If you want to try either of these techniques, ensure the fabric is lying flat - if you hold the fabric up whilst using the hair spray or wipes, the ink will run down the article making the stain even bigger.

Please note that we do not recommend using hair spray or baby wipes on stains simply because the variations in product formulas, fabrics and inks are so great it is better to leave it to the experts.

Removing Permanent Marker

Permanent markers are designed to be just that - permanent. For that reason, it is near impossible to get a permanent marking off any porous surface such as cardboard, wood, concrete and some plastics without physically scrapping or sanding off the stain. However, if you wish to remove permanent markings off a non-porous surface such as glass, metal or laminate, try eucalyptus oil or household grade cleaning fluid. Always test the cleaner on an inconspicuous part of the surface before applying it to the entire stain.

Erasing Permanent Marker from a Whiteboard

Many a whiteboard have 'ghost' marks left from when somebody accidentally used a permanent instead of a whiteboard marker. If you notice the mistake quickly enough, simply write over the permanent markings with a whiteboard marker and then rub off as usual. The reason why this trick works is because the whiteboard marker actually reactivates the permanent ink, leaving it temporarily erasable. Is you still have difficultly removing the stain, use Artline Whiteboard Cleaner.

A good way to make sure you don't mix your permanent and whiteboard markers is to use Dry Safe products for one set and traditional markers for the other. Dry Safe markers are a different shape and size to traditional Artline markers and have the advantage of continuing to work even after 2 weeks of having their lid left off (or 48 hours for Dry Safe whiteboard markers).

Lifting Ink Stains Off Duco

Once an ink stain gets on the duco of your car, it makes the whole interior look bad. One trick used by some people to fix this sticky situation is to spray the stain with Aerogaurd, which sometimes reactivates the ink allowing it to be removed.

Before trying this technique, ensure you test the duco's reaction to the Aeroguard in an inconspicuous spot. Ultimately, we recommend you contact your car's manufacturer to find out what cleaning product is best suited for your vehicle.

Removing Ink from Skin

In all cases, any Artline ink that is accidentally written onto human skin will eventually wear off with regular washing. However, should you wish to remove the ink immediately, make-up wipes are generally strong enough to lift the stain.

If ink has been spilt or written on any sensitive skin, such as on the face, ensure extra care is taken not to move the ink closer to the eyes, nose or mouth. If you are concerned the ink may get into these areas, seek advice from your general practitioner or pharmacist immediately.
