ARTIST BIO
My name is Elaine Tooth. I was born in 1968 in England, to Irish parents. I have been living in Brisbane, Australia since I was 4 years old.
I started drawing when I was about 10 years old and I was always getting in trouble at school for drawing pictures in my schoolbooks instead of doing my work.
At high school our textbooks were always full of cartoon characters or pictures drawn in pen & ink. Instead of doing the exercises the teacher set for us, I was always copying the illustrations instead.
When we were given the opportunity to do work experience through school, I chose cartooning.
I was first placed at “The Sunday Sun” newspaper in Brisbane and then later at “The Courier Mail” Brisbane where I got to work with cartoonist such as Sean Leahy, Gerard Piper and Tony Champ. These guys were fantastic. They were my idols. This is where I started to stipple. Cartoonists often use stipple to shade their cartoons.
Eventually I went on to attend The Commercial Art Training Centre where I received high honours for my illustrations.
I went on to work as a graphic artist in a print shop, until my children were born.
These days I am enjoying doing commission work and I enter my work in local shows and exhibitions where i have managed to win quite a few awards.
